PICO question

  • Population: Mechanically ventilated ICU patients

  • Interventions: ≥2.2 g/kg/day of protein (using dry pre-ICU actual body weight)

  • Comparison: ≤1.2 g/kg/day of protein (using dry pre-ICU actual body weight)

  • Outcomes: 60 day mortality, time to discharge

Inclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria

  • ≥18 years old

  • Likely to be mechanically ventilated >48h

  • At least one high risk feature:

    • Low (<25) or High BMI (>35)

    • Moderate/severe malnutrition

    • Frailty

    • Sarcopenia

    • Likely to be ventilated >4 days

  • >96 continuous hours of mechanical ventilation before enrolment

  • Expected death/withdrawal within 7 days

  • Pregnant

  • Needs TPN and no high-protein feeds available
