  • Population: ICU patients with vitamin D deficiency (VDD)

  • Interventions: Vitamin D supplementation for 90 days

  • Comparison: Placebo

  • Outcomes: 28-day mortality

Inclusion criteria

Exclusion criteria

  • Patients ≥18 years

  • Anticipated ICU stay ≥48 hours

  • ≤72 hours in ICU before screening for VDD

  • Severe VDD (≤12ng/ml ) after ICU admission

  • Severe GI dysfunction

  • Not expected to survive 48h / treatment withdrawal imminent

  • DNACPR

  • Hypercalcemia (>2.65mmol)

  • Kidney stones within the last 12 months

  • Active TB within the last 12 months

  • Sarcoidosis within the last 12 months

  • Pregnant/lactating

  • Hypersensitivity to the trial drug

  • Felt inappropirate by medical team

  • Prisoners
