Treatment of invasively ventilated adults with Early Activity and Mobilisation

PICO Question
Population: Ventilated patients within 48 hours of initiation of mechanical ventilation
Interventions: Clonidine ± opioid analgesic or Dexmedetomidine ± opioid analgesic
Comparison: Usual care sedation with propofol ± opioid analgesic
Outcome: Time from randomisation to successful extubation

Inclusion criteria
Exclusion criteria
Aged >18y
Ventilated, and expected to remain so >48h
Sufficient cardiovascular stability
Sufficient respiratory stability
Dependent for ADLS prior to current ICU admission
Documented cognitive impairment
Acute primary brain pathology
Spinal cord injury/neuromuscular (excluding ICU acquired weakness)
Requires bed rest / bilateral non-weight bearing for lower limbs
Life expectancy <180 days
Death inevitable/limitations/withdrawal
Unable to communicate in English
ICU admission ≥72h after filling inclusion criteria
